Notes

“Floral bouquet Devil’s Trumpet is made from the recycled electroplated cutlery in Margate in 2016. It is designed and made by Ann Carrington. Who graduated from The Royal College of Art in 1987. This work was exhibited in her solo show at the Royal College of Art in July 2016. It was acquired by the V&A shortly afterwards, and display in V&A’s Silver Galleries Room 68.” “Devil’s Trumpet in inspired by Dutch still life paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is also partly influenced by the work of Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721), who was celebrated for his sculptural garlands featuring cascades of fruits.” “In these paintings objects such as flowers and pocket watches are used to remind the viewer of the passage of time and the impermanence of life.”

Memoirs

This artefact was impressed me from our V&A trip on September 24, 2019. It is a very fine handicraft in my view. At that time, I took pictures and sketched it. It surprised me when I looked closely, I discovered that the flowers are in fact made by the normal tableware. Spoons, forks and also have a few spice jars that we use in our daily life. But Ann Carrington uses those ordinary steel, nickel and silver-plated object to let them bending, repeating and combining them into a new floral form.

Fragments

“Trough welded and soldered methods, Carrington has created a piece that resembles a bouquet of flowers. And the flower prototype has roses, hydrangeas and proteas. Nestled amongst these is also a single deadly Devil’s Trumpet flower (from which the sculpture takes its name).”

Self-thought

I got inspiration from this artefact is to think about discover the charm of ordinary objects and give materials a “second life” to understand the recreate, unrestricted, to breaking through conventional design thinking. Also, expand my specialist choice of materials such as not only thinks about the store selling fabric.
